Interactive broadband could be used to help unemployed or underemployed individuals prepare for their job search through on line skills assessments, resume writing instruction and interviewing skills hints as well as support blogs. This would be particularly helpful to the newly unemployed, especially workers who have not recently experienced the job search process.
People could access the state or county sites from home or their local library. This should:
1. reduce the long waits to see job counselors
2. better utilize the staff by focusing their work on people who have already done the basic groundwork for their job search and
3. avoid the generally demoralizing experience of going to the unemployment office
4. provide a support network (via blogs) for the unemployed
The current system is unwieldy and expensive and does not seem to result in effective employment opportunities beyond entry level jobs.
